Natural, Free-Range, Organic… What do they really mean?

• Natural: A “natural” product does not contain any added artificial ingredients or color and is minimally processed, just enough to prepare it for cooking.
• Free-Range: These chickens are provided access to the outdoors. Chickens labeled “free-range” are not “organic” unless they meet additional, more stringent organic standards.
• Vegetarian Fed: These chickens are raised on a diet of vegetarian feed without any animal by-products but are not “organic” unless they meet additional, more stringent organic standards.
• No-Antibiotics: These chickens are raised without the use of antibiotics but are not “organic” unless they meet additional, more stringent organic standards.
• Organic: These chickens are natural, free-range, raised on vegetarian feed and raised without antibiotics. Because they are organic they are raised on a diet of vegetarian feed that is also certified to be organic which means that it contains only organically-produced ingredients. In addition to being free-range, with access to the outdoors, they follow strict environmental guidelines which ensure that the ground they have access to is certified to be pesticide free. They are never given any antibiotics or added hormones or steroids. These chickens must be processed in a production facility that is certified organic and that guarantees no cross contamination with any non-organic products. In order to ensure that they met all of these stringent organic requirements they are certified not only by the USDA but also by a reputable third party certifying agency.
